Resveratrol is a polyphenolic, natural antimicrobial produced by some plants. It consists of two double bonded benzene rings with one ring having two hydroxyl groups and the other having one hydroxyl group. It occurs naturally in a number of plant products. It was originally extracted from the roots of white hellebore. It also occurs in the skin of red grapes. Research on animal models has demonstrated its beneficial properties. It is believed to possess anti-aging properties and anti-cancer properties. It interferes with all three stages of cancer—initiation, promotion and progression. It also possesses anti inflammatory and blood sugar lowering effects.
